RBI Intervention Helps Limit Rupee Losses as Oil Prices and US Rate Expectations Weigh on Currency

Rupee faces pressure amid global market uncertainty

The Indian rupee remained under pressure against the U.S. dollar on Wednesday as rising crude oil prices and expectations surrounding U.S. Federal Reserve policy increased concerns about emerging-market currencies.

The rupee closed at approximately ₹95.9550 per U.S. dollar, after briefly touching ₹95.9750, its weakest level since late July, according to Reuters. Strong dollar demand from Indian companies and uncertainty ahead of the Federal Reserve’s policy announcement contributed to the pressure. <Cite refs={[“turn0news22”]}/>

RBI intervention helps contain volatility

Market participants reported that the Reserve Bank of India may have intervened in the foreign-exchange market to support the rupee. State-run banks were observed selling dollars, which traders said was likely linked to central-bank intervention.

The reported intervention helped limit the currency’s decline and kept the rupee above the ₹96-per-dollar level during recent trading sessions. Reuters noted that the RBI has been actively participating in currency markets to manage excessive volatility. <Cite refs={[“turn0news20″,”turn0news22”]}/>

Crude oil adds pressure to the currency

Higher crude oil prices remain a major concern for India’s external finances. Brent crude was trading above $100 per barrel, with Reuters reporting prices around $108 per barrel amid Middle East tensions and supply disruptions.

India imports much of its crude oil, so a sustained increase in oil prices can raise the country’s import bill and increase demand for U.S. dollars. This can create additional pressure on the rupee, particularly when global dollar demand is already strong. <Cite refs={[“turn0news21″,”turn0news22”]}/>

Federal Reserve decision in focus

Investors were also awaiting the U.S. Federal Reserve’s policy announcement. Interest-rate decisions in the United States can influence global capital flows, bond yields and currency markets.

Higher U.S. interest rates or expectations of tighter monetary policy can support the dollar and make emerging-market assets relatively less attractive. Investors were watching the Federal Open Market Committee statement and comments from Fed Chair Kevin Warsh for indications about the future direction of policy. <Cite refs={[“turn0news22”]}/>

Foreign inflows provide some support

India has also been receiving foreign-currency inflows through the Reserve Bank of India’s special FCNR(B) deposit swap facility, which was introduced to encourage foreign-currency deposits from non-resident Indians.

Recent reports said banks had mobilised substantial funds through the scheme. These inflows can improve the availability of foreign currency for the banking system, although they do not eliminate the effects of oil prices, global interest rates or corporate dollar demand. <Cite refs={[“turn0news6″,”turn0news14”]}/>

What the rupee movement means for the economy

Currency movements can affect several parts of the Indian economy. A weaker rupee may increase the cost of imported crude oil, electronics, machinery and other goods. It can also affect companies with foreign-currency borrowing or international payment obligations.

At the same time, exporters may receive more rupees for foreign-currency earnings, depending on their business structure and hedging arrangements. The overall impact therefore differs across industries.

Conclusion

The Indian rupee faced renewed pressure on September 16 as high oil prices, strong dollar demand and U.S. interest-rate uncertainty influenced currency markets. Reported RBI intervention helped limit the decline, while foreign-currency inflows provided an additional source of support.

Investors and businesses will continue to monitor global oil prices, Federal Reserve policy, foreign capital flows and the RBI’s approach to currency-market volatility.
